Undergraduate Education Officer – Maria Olteanu
My name is Maria Olteanu, studying French and History in my final year, and I am a candidate for Student Officer Undergraduate Education.

How do you aim to help undergraduate students in the midst of financial hardship?
I think the SU generally does a good job during financial hardship particularly with the pantry; I think it could be doing more by providing additional support through meals, as well as helping students through the cost of living crisis in general; finding accommodation can be a nightmare sometimes in Belfast, and there’s little support for students. Lobbying the SU regarding that, to get more agreements with accommodation, and also concerning landlords in the area – to help students survive a bit easier!
What do you think isn’t been done enough by the SU in terms of undergraduate students, and what are your additional plans for improvement?
I think the SU and the university does have good support systems for students, but I can’t say they’re doing enough, particularly when students are paying extortionate fees. They do have the Sexual Health Clinic, and support for assingments, but, for the amount that the SU could help students, I don’t think there’s enough awareness from students; they feel they can’t ask for help, and then they won’t receive it, which means your education will suffer from that lack of help.
What experience – in SU and general student involvement – can you bring to this role?
Currently I am the Secretary of the French Society, so I deal with the bureaucratic side of running a society. With that I’ve been dealing with the SU, running events and ensuring they run smoothly. This year I’ve been involved with the Homework Club, working with children, specifically with the Northern Irish Somali Association; helping refugees not only with homework but often their English, depending on their level. I hope that I can help with students abroad who feel out of place at university, to make sure that they are heard and their needs are meet.
What do you do in your free time?
I read a lot – my favourite book is Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak.
