Accessible Education Officer – Morrigan McEvoy
My name is Morrigan McEvoy, I’m a second-year Psychology student, and I’m a candidate for the position of Accessible Education Officer.

How do you aim to help postgraduate students in the midst of financial hardship?
It’s getting worse, which means mental health is getting worse; student support is not matching that. Also, people feel that they have nowhere to go in the Union. It’s my goal to help them find where to go, and if they don’t know they can come to me. I will help them with any problem they have financially, especially international students, as I think there’s not a lot of support done – especially in the cost of living crisis – for them, with bursaries, grants, loans, part-time work, how QWork works. Also, for other students; mature, undergraduate and postgraduates – to understand how they can help themselves in the cost of living, and how we can help them as well.
What do you think isn’t been done enough by the SU in terms of accessibility, and what are your additional plans for improvement?
The past role was Equality and Diversity, whereas the new role of Accessibility actually encompasses a lot more. I think that with just Equality and Diversity, other students can fall through the cracks, and so it’s very important that everyone gets the same treatment. I think what’s been outlined in the position is mostly academics and helping students along with their studies. I do want to take that on in the role, but I also want to focus on the social aspect. Also, sustainability is something that hasn’t been outlined in the role in the past. I am a passionate advocate for fighting against climate change, and that QUB actually divests from fossil fuels this year, as they said they were going to.
What experience – in SU and general student involvement – can you bring to this role?
Currently I’m a Course Rep for Psychology, and that really did inspire me to go on for this position; it’s really important especially as Psychology’s a really big class. A lot of people don’t want to say their opinion, and a lot of people don’t want to say their opinion, or they don’t know who to talk to personally about certain things. As Course Rep, I really got to see what students actually want, and what they’re lacking; I think I can bring that to the Union to make it a more inclusive place, with extra support for students.
What do you do in your free time?
I like to play music, that is when I’m not lazy. When I pick up my guitar, I like to play and sing. One of the things I’ve been advocating for at the SU is Battle of the Bands. I was in a band but I’m not anymore; it’s hard to get in one and find people, but maybe one day!
