World’s best rugby player: Antoine Dupont’s outstanding career
The French rugby star Antoine Dupont, who is today among the most well-known rugby players of the world, is one of a select few players to have won virtually every possible title. Hailing from South-West France, a rugby-mad region, he has made a remarkable rise.

Antoine Dupont, born on the 15th of November 1996 in a farming family, comes from Castelnau-Magnoac, a little city in south-western France. He has been playing rugby since the age of 4, when he joined the local club, in which he played until the age of 15. In 2011, while he was still in the junior category (under 16), Dupont joined the training centre of FC Auch. In 2014, right after playing the final of the French’s under 18 championship, Antoine Dupont officially signed with Castres Olympique, a club which competes in the Top14, the top-tier professional French rugby union league.
On the 26th of October 2014, while he was still 17, Dupont made his debut with the professional team during a game against Leinster Rugby. In January of the following year, he was selected as a starter for the same team and scored his first professional try. During the 2014-2015 season, the little prodigy was selected to play the Under-20s Six nations Championship with the French team and played 3 games as a substitute. The next season, he was also chosen to play in the Under-20s World Championship.
In March 2017, Dupont made his international debut as a player of the “XV de France”, the French senior men’s team, against the Italian team, in Rome.
The 2017-2018 season marked a turning point for him, as he joined the Stade Toulousain, the most successful French club in the Top14 and the European Cup, based in Toulouse, a vibrant city in the south-west of France. However, at that time the club was not among the best in the French league, but Dupont’s strong performances helped the team to qualify and reach the final rounds in 2019. Dupont has established himself as Toulouse’s first-choice scrum-half and wins the final and his first “Bouclier de Brennus” (Brennus shield), the trophy awarded to the winner of the Top14.
In 2019, right after being named French champion, Dupont took part of the World Cup in Japan, where he scored against Argentina and secures France a place in the quarter-finals, in which they were later knocked out.
From 2020 onwards, he is regarded as one of the world’s best scrum-halfs, with a consistency at the highest level. In fact, that year he played a major part in the victory of France against England during the Six Nations Championship, in a game where he was selected as a starter against the 2019’s World Championship runners-up.
The following years, Antoine Dupont continues to rack up victories and titles. Indeed, in 2021, the Stade Toulousain won the double: the European Championship and the Top14. In October of the same year, he became captain of the French team, under the new head-coach Fabien Galthié, and won and important game against the All Blacks, New Zealand’s team, in Paris. At the end of the year, Antoine Dupont is elected as The World Rugby Men’s 15s player of the Year at the World Rugby Awards.
In 2024, he sets himself a challenge: to play rugby sevens and to join the French national team. In February, he is called up to prepare for the Olympic Games and takes part in tournaments in Vancouver and then Los Angeles, where “Les Bleus” -the Blues, the nickname given to the French team- won.
The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris were a success for Antoine Dupont, as he played a major part in the victory of France during the final against Fiji, scoring several times during the game. This was in fact France’s first gold medal of this year’s Olympic games. To top it all off, he is elected as world’s best men rugby sevens player by World Rugby the same year.

Antoine Dupont is today considered the most versatile and skilled player, thanks to his approach to the game, his speed and his tackles as well. He is now regarded as one of the legends of French Rugby and has also grown in popularity among those who are not especially interested in rugby.
For several years now, he has been appearing in other fields such as music in a song’s video clip, or cinema with his participation in a documentary or his visit to the last Cannes Film Festival.
Antoine Dupont’s last possible achievement would be winning the Rugby World Cup, whose next edition will take place in 2027 in Australia.
