Back to Belfast with a Bang: A guide to Belfast’s student nightlife
By Ellen Lundy
The Christmas tree may be coming down but the party season has only just begun. As we bid adieu to long lie-ins and the warmth of a home cooked meal, we are the thrown back into the lion’s den with Belfast’s refreshers week. Let us ring in the new year in style with a week of partying and celebrating our return for yet another semester of studies. Here’s a guide to some of the best nights in Belfast!
Sunday
Kick-start the week with a bang at Hatfield, where a jersey is the dress code du jour. Get ready for a night of ceilidhs, laughter and spirited drinking. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just hoping not to trip over your own feet, Hatfield’s Sunday soirée promises an unforgettable start to the week.
Monday
For a vibrant Monday night, ‘Scratch’ in Limelight is the ultimate destination. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you may dare to brave the cold winter breeze that will be sure to accompany a night at Warehouse. However, the more mature student may find solace in a cosy pub or even the unthinkable—yes, the library. As deadlines loom, some students choose to brave the McClay, armed with textbooks and determination, in a quest for academic triumph.
Tuesday
As Tuesday rolls around, Hatfield beckons once again for those seeking a familiar haven. However, the bold and adventurous may embark on a trek to Kremlin, a nightspot steeped in mystery and intrigue. The real challenge? Racing to McDonald’s at 10 to 2 before it closes—a quest that rivals the feats of any great Greek hero.
Wednesday
Wednesday brings a mix-up of musical delights. Personal favourites include Thompsons’ funk extravaganza or the extra-terrestrial allure of UFO in Limelight. Don’t be deceived; UFO isn’t just for techno enthusiasts. As a self-confessed pop addict, I can attest to the enjoyment of a night or two under UFO’s spell.
Thursday
To round up the week, Thursday’s prime spot is Babba in Limelight, especially if you’re a first-year reveller. Core memories are forged on Babba’s dance floor, an experience not to be missed. As a second-year student, I yearn for the weekly trek from Elms to Limelight as we journeyed toward the holy grail.
Friday
Congratulations! You’ve conquered a long and arduous week, proving yourself a brave and noble soldier. Now, it’s time to relax. Return to the motherland—be it Newry, Derry or further afield—for some well-deserved rest and relaxation or, for those such as myself, a weekend job. Reflect on the week’s escapades and gear up for the adventures that lie ahead. You may have won the battle but the war (assignments) is fast approaching!
