QUB SU21: STUDENTS UNION LEADER ELECTIONS CANDIDATE PROFILES – LAURIE REAVY

In the run up to the Student Union Elections, taking place from Monday 1st March 2021, The Gown is featuring candidates who are running for student office in the Queen’s University Student Union Elections, for the next 2021-2022 academic year.
As The Gown Editor, I am pleased to introduce Laurie Reavy to this QUB SU Elections 2021 series of features. Laurie is running for VP for Equality and Diversity. She hopes to bring international students into the fold, believing that they have been sidelined over the past year at a critical moment during the Coronavirus pandemic.
My name is Laurie I am currently in final year English with Creative Writing.
I am running for VP for Equality and Diversity in the upcoming Student Union elections.
This role covers ten underrepresented groups at QUB, so I have everyone in my sights as far as action and support, should I be elected into the role.
My main manifesto points are those which need immediate action:
- Student safety on campus and in accommodations
- Refund 20/21 accommodation fees for all international students
- Better mental health support
- Cancel all student tuition fees as a barrier to education
Whilst these are my main focus points, this list is not exhaustive, and I will be available to help all those who fall under the category of Equality and Diversity.
I’d really like to bring international students to the forefront of the QUB eyeline. They have truly been forgotten over the past year. That includes refunds, financial support and better academic support.
I want to delve into student safety and protocols for reporting, especially for sexual harassment and racism complaints.
And of course the mental health of students from the underrepresented groups is hugely important as well as all student mental health. I will be fighting the university to take this seriously!
